Rahul Gandhi declared Congress Prez, celebrations at HQ
New Delhi, Dec 11 (UNI) Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was on Monday elected unopposed to the post of the party president, making a generational change within the party.
Rahul will replace his mother, Sonia Gandhi, who held the party reins for a record 19 years.
Mr Gandhi was declared elected to the post by Chairman of the Central election authority Mullapally Ramachandran after he was the only candidate to file nomination for the post after the end of the deadline for withdrawal of nominations.
''Eighty nine nomination papers proposing the name of Mr Rahul Gandhi for Congress president have been recceived. All the nomination papers have been found valid.
"Since the withdrawal date/time is over and as there is only one candidate, as per Article 18(D) of the Constitution of the Indian National Congress, I hereby declare Mr Rahul Gandhi elected as president of the Indian National Congress,'' Mr Ramachandran said at the press conference, which was also addressed by members of the authority Madhusudan Mistry and Bhubneswar Kalita.
Monday was the last day for withdrawal of candidature for the post of Congress president.
The announcement of Rahul as the Congress president sparked off celebrations at the Congress headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, with party workers shouting slogans 'Desh Ka Neta Kaisa Ho, Rahul Gandhi jaisa Ho'.
The party workers also celebrated the elevation of Rahul to the party's top post with the bursting of crackers and fireworks.
AICC senior spokesperson Ajay Maken said that the elevation of Rahul as Conrgess president would infuse new energy and vigour into the party.
Describing it as a 'historic occasion', Chairman of the Central Election Authority Ramachandran said Mr Gandhi will be handed over the certificate of his appointment as Congress president on December 16 at 11 am at the party headquarters on 24 Akbar Road, in the presence of Mrs Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders.
Mr Ramachandran said he was happy to inform that they were able to complete the election process in the stipulated time-frame set by the Election Authority.
''Never did Mr Rahul Gandhi or Mrs Sonia Gandhi intervened in the election process,'' he said.
The process for election for Congress president kick started on December 1 with issuance of notification.
December 4 was last date for filing of nominations while December 5 was the date for scrutiny.
Altogether 89 nominations received in his favour were found to be valid during scrutiny.
The announcement of his election as Congress president comes three days ahead of voting for second phase of polling for Gujarat assembly elections, seen as the first major test of Rahul's leadership after becoming the party president.
