New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, President-elect of the United Nations General Assembly, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Friday.
"Prime Minister congratulated Ms Espinosa on her election to the post of President of the 73rd UN General Assembly," a release from PMO said.
Ms Espinosa shared her priorities for the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly.
Prime Minister assured her of India’s full and constructive cooperation in discharging her new responsibilities.
They also discussed the need for stronger UN action on major global challenges including terrorism, United Nations reform and climate change, the release said.
In a Twitter posting, Ms Espinosa said she had a "successful meeting" with the Prime Minister.
"I shared my priorities. We agreed on the importance of implementing commitments and improving the efficiency of the UN. I thanked him for India’s support to my office. We will continue working together," she tweeted.
Ecuadorian politician and poet Espinosa becomes fourth woman to preside over UN General Assembly.
She will also meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday.
Ms Espinosa is also expected to address an interactive session on the 'Revitalisation of UN General Assembly' at Indian Council of World Affairs at Sapru House here.
