DPCC demands roll back of hike in VAT on diesel, petrol by Delhi Govt

New Delhi, Jun 17 (UNI) Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Ch Anil Kumar has demanded the immediate roll back of the hike in VAT rate on petrol and diesel, which has been pushed to 30 per cent, by Arvind Kejriwal Government as the people of Delhi are in a severe financial distress following the Covid-19 pandemic crisis and are not in a position to afford the steep hike in petroleum products.

In a letter to Mr Kejriwal today, Mr Kumar stressed that following Narendra Modi Government insensitively hiking the prices of petrol and diesel more than 10 times since the beginning of March when the people of the country and Delhi have faced unprecedented public health, economic and social challenges, the Delhi Government followed suit by hiking VAT on petrol and diesel, which has imposed an unbearable burden on the people of Delhi.
He said that Congress president Sonia Gandhi has also written to Prime Minister to roll back the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel.
Mr Kumar said that the hike in the diesel prices will have a direct impact on the prices of essential commodities and other items, putting terrible mental and financial difficulties on the people.
Mr Kumar appealed to the Chief Minister to use his powers to roll back the hike in VAT on petrol and diesel as Kejriwal has always advocated free facilities to the people of Delhi, including power and water, and free pilgrimage to senior citizens.
The Delhi Congress chief also hailed the Supreme Court strictures on the Kejriwal Government over the suspension of health care workers exposing facts relating to the conditions in hospitals saying that “don’t shoot the messenger, don’t threaten doctors and nurses, support them”.
He said that it was for the second time in the week that the apex court has censured the Kejriwal Government for its ham-handed handling of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis.
He said that Delhi Congress has been highlighting the plight of doctors, nurses, paramedics and patients and the terrible condition of hospitals like the LNJP for the past many weeks, but the Kejriwal Government did not heed our suggestions and complaints.

He said that it was an irony that senior citizens of Delhi were now struggling to get beds in hospitals, even Corona-dedicated hospitals.
“It was a clear admission by the Delhi Government that it could not improve the facilities in hospitals when it’s counsel informed the apex court bench that after the recent visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the LNJP Hospital, things were being improved,” he said.
He said that only a blind, deaf and dump man will believe that Mr Shah’s visit improved facilities at the LNJP hospital overnight, though the Union Home Minister seemed to have been in “home quarantine” in the past three months when the Covid pandemic made a rapid stride in the Capital.
