New Delhi, Nov 17 (UNI) Congress MP from Assam Pradyut Bordoloi has urged the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement the Bezbaruah Committee's recommendation at the earliest.
The Committee which was constituted on February 5, 2014 under the chairmanship of MP Bezbaruah to look into the issues, including racial discrimination of people from North Eastern (NE) states residing in various parts of the country, specially in metropolitan cities, had submitted its report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on July 11, 2014.
"The Bezbaruah Committee report captures the extent of discrimination, prejudice and violence faced by the North Eastern community and provide a range of short and long term measures for government action. Although it has been over seven years since the Committee submitted its report, it is unfortunate that there
have hardly been any efforts towards meaningful implementation," the Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon wrote in his letter addressed to the Home Minister, a copy of which he uploaded on social media on Wednesday.
Bordoloi also claimed that discrimination against the people of NE has gone unabated and even exacerbated amid the Covid outbreak.
"As equal citizens from India from the NE are entitled to freedom from discrimination in any and every part of this country. I urge the MHA to revisit the Committee's recommendations and ensure meaningful implementation at the earliest," he wrote.
Meanwhile, Bordoloi also condemned the recent incident of a TV show anchor's racist remark on an Assam participant and said, "It reflects lack of sensitisation towards people of NE."
"Beyond condemning such acts, we must call for urgent implementation of the Bezbaruah Committee recommendations, long over due since 2014," he wrote in a tweet.
