New Delhi, Dec 5 (UNI) Mizoram Chief Minister and MNF chief Zoramthanga called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Thursday.
The meeting has been described as a courtesy call.
The meeting assumes significance as Mizoram state also witnessed protest over the issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill.
The Union cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to the new draft law on the Citizenship Amendment Act and which is likely to be taken in Parliament next week.
The new Bill aims to provide citizenship to those who had been forced to seek shelter in India because of religious persecution or fear of persecution in their home countries, primarily Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Last week 12 non-BJP MPs belonging to both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged him to exclude the north eastern states from the purview of the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has held discussions lately with important stakeholders and Chief Ministers of Assam Sarbanand Sonowal and Meghalaya Conrad Sangma among others even as there have been reports of unrest in the north east region over Citizenship Amendment Bill.
