New Delhi, Jul 25 (UNI) Lashing out at Rahul Gandhi on Saturday after the Congress leader accused the public transporter of making profit through Shramik trains, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said only those who "looted" the country can call subsidy a profit.
'Only those who loot the country can call subsidy a profit. Railways invested more money in running labour trains than the amount taken from state governments,' Mr Goyal said in his tweet.
'Now people are asking what happened to Soniaji's promise to give the ticket money?,' he asked in his missive.
Mr Gandhi accused the government of benefitting by making profits during the coronavirus-induced lockdown when people were in trouble.
'The 'clouds' of disease are there, people are in trouble. (One) can take benefits - by converting disaster into profit, the anti-poor government is earning,' the Congress leader said in his tweet in Hindi, tagging a news report.
The Indian Railways earned Rs 429.90 crore revenue through the fares of its Shramik Special trains till July 9, data shared by the railway ministry shows.
However, railways spent much more than it earned through fares - around Rs 2,400 crore - in operating the Shramik trains, a senior ministry official said.
