CWC meet underway, assembly and organisational polls on agenda

New Delhi, Oct 16 (UNI) The Congress Working Committee began its meeting on Saturday and is expected to discuss the current political situation, besides elections for the party president's post and upcoming assembly polls, among other issues.
This is the first physical meeting of the highest decision making body of the party since the Coronavirus outbreak.
Congress leaders are expected to pass a resolution demanding the sacking of Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, whose son was allegedly involved in running a car over farmers, killing five people in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.
Resolutions are also likely to passed against the fuel price hike and ongoing farmers' agitation.
Organisational elections to elect a new party president is among the key issues, amid demands from several senior party leaders to have an elected president. Presently Sonia Gandhi is serving as the interim president of the party.
The meeting comes days after the G-23 leaders once again demanded a full-time president for the party.
While senior leader Kapil Sibal had held a press conference, questioning the decision making process in the party, Ghulam Nabi Azad had written to Sonia Gandhi demanding holding a CWC meet.
Congress sources said that party reached out to the senior leaders ahead of the meeting, the charge for which was taken by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The Kheri incident is expected to give fodder to the Congress to put the BJP on a backfoot in UP.
Sources say the meet today is also likely to discuss the dates for holding elections for the new party president.
The meeting comes amid rumblings within party units in Punjab, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, where the Congress is in power.
Poll-bound states will also be in focus, especially Uttar Pradesh where Priyanka Gandhi has been leading the charge.
Last meeting of the CWC was held in August last year in the wake of a letter by the G-23 leaders, seeking organisational reforms and a full time president. After an over seven hours long meet, it was decided that Sonia Gandhi would continue on her post.
