Congress forms committee to study caste census

New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) The Congress on Friday announced a committee that will study caste census, after demands from several quarters for counting people of backward classes in the country.
The committee constituted by party president Sonia Gandhi has former Karnataka chief minister and former union minister Veerappa Moily as the convenor.
Other members include Abhishek Singhvi, Salman Khurshid, Mohan Prakash, RPN Singh, PL Punia and Kuldeep Bishnoi.
Demands for the next census to include counting the backward classes has come up from several political parties including BJP's own allies, as well as from some OBC leaders in the BJP, putting government in a tight spot.
A delegation of all parties from Bihar, including BJP ally Janata Dal (United) and main opposition party in the state Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) met Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a caste census on August 23.
The demand for a census to count other backward classes was raised during the debate on a constitutional amendment Bill to restore states' power to have their own OBC lists.
BJP's ally in Uttar Pradesh, Apna Dal leader and Union Minister Anupriya Patel is among the leaders who demanded a caste census, which is likely to come up as an issue in upcoming polls in the state.
