Police Commemoration Day: India pays homage

New Delhi/Lucknow, Oct 21 (UNI) India today remembered 10 policemen killed in firing in 1959 by Chinese troops. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and state Chief Ministers across the nation paid homage to the police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. In the Capital, Director of Intelligence Bureau Rajiv Jain read out the names of the 383 Police Personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty across the country from September 2016 to August 2017. He said the martyrs included 76 from Uttar Pradesh Police, 56 from BSF, 49 from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 42 from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, 23 from Chhattisgarh, 16 from West Bengal, 13 each from Delhi and CISF, 12 each from Bihar and Karnataka and 11 from the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Majority of the police personnel died in firing from Pakistan, fighting militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, Naxals and other law and order duties, Mr Jain added. October 21 is observed as Police Commemoration Day to pay homage to 10 policemen killed in firing by Chinese troops in 1,959 and 34,400 others, who laid down their lives protecting the country's unity and integrity. A Police Commemoration Day Parade was also held at the National Police Memorial, in presence of Mr Rajnath Singh and Minister of State of Human Resource Development, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Dr Satya Pal Singh. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba, heads of all the Central Paramilitary Forces and the Commissioner of Delhi Police, senior officers of the Ministry of Home Affairs, apart from retired Police Officers, attended the event, hosted by CISF. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced to hike the number of police awards by over 250 per cent besides double the ex-gratia amount to martyred policemen family. The CM hiked the food allowances of the policemen in the state. "Police officials who were getting Rs 600 would now get Rs 800 per month, those who were getting Rs 900 would get Rs 1200 per month, those who were getting Rs 1,050 per month would get Rs 1,500 and those who were getting Rs 950 would get Rs 1350 per month," Mr Adityanath added. At the function of Police ‘Smriti Diwas’ the CM said that the ex-gratia payment for the martyr families have been doubled to Rs 40 lakhs from Rs 20 lakh, while compensation to their parents have been increased to Rs 10 lakhs from Rs 5 lakh.
