New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) Every political party and politician should put nation first and their misrepresentation of emotion towards the other should not tantamount to a disservice to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday in an apparent attack on the Opposition parties amid frequent adjournments in Parliament.
He said it is the responsibility of every political party not to misplace their opposition for a certain party or individual into opposition towards the country.
Addressing a programme virtually marking the 10th death anniversary of socialist leader late Harmohan Singh Yadav, the Prime Minister said: "Ideologies have, and should have their place. There are political ambitions but the country and the society comes first. The nation comes first."
He said that in recent times, the trend of putting ideology or political interests above the interest of society and the country has started.
"Many times, some opposition parties obstruct the work of the government because when they were in power, they could not implement the decisions," the Prime Minister said targeting the Opposition.
Recalling the words of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Modi underlined the primacy of the nation above party politics. He said "parties exist because of democracy, and democracy exists because of the country. Most of the parties in our country, especially all the non-Congress parties have also followed this idea and the ideal of cooperation and coordination for the country."
The Prime Minister stressed that for the service of society, it is also necessary that we accept the spirit of social justice, and adopt it. He noted that social justice means that every section of society should get equal opportunities, and no one should be deprived of the basic necessities of life.
"Dalits, Backward, Adivasis, Women, Divyang, when they come forward, only then the country will go ahead," he said.
Paying tribute to Harmohan Singh Yadav, the Prime Minister said that he carried forward the ideas of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia in his long political career.
"Harmohan Singh Yadav ji not only took a political stand against the Sikh genocide, but he also came out and fought to protect the Sikh brothers and sisters. Risking his own life, he saved the lives of so many Sikh families, innocents," he said.
The country also recognized his leadership and he was given Shaurya Chakra, the Prime Minister added.
Harmohan Singh Yadav was an important leader of the Samajwadi Party and had very close relations with Mulayam Singh Yadav. After the death of Chaudhary Charan Singh, it was Harmohan Singh who proposed to Yadav Mahasabha that Mulayam Singh should become their leader now. This led to a tremendous rise in the stature of Mulayam Singh.
During the 1984 riots, Harmohan Singh was at home with his son Sukhram. They had with them a rifle, carbine, and guns. When the infuriated mob approached their locality, they moved to the terrace and fired in the air, driving back the attackers.

Local Sikhs went to Harmohan Singh's house for shelter, and his family protected them from attack until the attackers were dispersed or arrested. For protecting the lives of the Sikhs, former President R Venkataraman awarded Harmohan Singh Yadav the Shaurya Chakra in 1991.
