New Delhi, Sep 14 (UNI) Describing Harivansh Narayan Singh as a torch-bearer of democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he has made efforts to ensure that productivity and positivity is maintained in Parliament.
“Harivanshji has made efforts to ensure productivity and positivity is maintained in the Parliament. He is a torchbearer of democracy. He comes from Bihar, the land known for its democratic ethos, the land that has close ties with JP (Jayaprakash Narayan) and Bapu’s Champaran,” the prime minister said in the Rajya Sabha after Mr Singh re-elected as the deputy chairman.
“I want to congratulate Harivansh Ji. Be it as a journalist or social worker, he has endeared himself to many. We have all seen the manner in which he conducts the House proceedings,” he said.
He also said that Mr Singh was an outstanding umpire during his tenure as deputy chairman.
“Harivansh Ji belongs to all sides of the aisle. He has conducted proceedings in an impartial manner. He has been an outstanding umpire and will continue being so in the times to come. He has always been diligent in performing his duties,” Mr Modi said.
“Harivansh Ji has represented India at many global conferences. Wherever he went, he left a mark and raised India’s prestige,” he added.
During his address, he also highlighted the role of Bihar in the country's parliamentary ethos and also recalled former greats like Jayaprakash Narayan and Karpuri Thakur.
Bihar, he said, has been the “land of India's democratic system, I believe that Harivansh Ji will take forward this legacy,” he added.
