New Delhi, Nov 26 (UNI) Cartoonist Sudhir Dar died on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest, his family members said.
He was 87.
The cartoonist, who was born in Prayagraj (then Allahabad), began his career with All India Radio (AIR) as an announcer. A sketch he drew of The Statesman news editor during a radio talk led to an offer to work at the paper.
Later Dar's cartoons appeared in The Hindustan Times, The Independent, The Pioneer, Delhi Times, New York Times, Washington Post and Saturday Review among others. Among other assignments, he illustrated diaries for the Ministries of Tourism, External Affairs, Jammu & Kashmir and drew calendars for the World Bank for 20 years.
The award winning artist was considered as one of the 'second generation' of editorial cartoonists, active mainly from the 1960s to the year 2000, which included RK Laxman, Abu Abraham, OV Vijayan and Rajinder Puri.
