New Delhi, Mar 15 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condemned the dastardly terrorist attack in Christchurch in New Zealand, condoled the deaths of people and said hatred and violence cannot have any place in diverse and democratic societies.
According to official sources, there have been indications that nine Indians have gone missing.
"Due to certain processes involved, official confirmation about Indian casualties may take a while to
come in. We will confirm officially only after we get an official confirmation given the sensitivities involved," the source said.
Prime Minister Modi has strongly condemned the terrorist attack, sources said adding the Embassy in New Zealand have set up 24×7 helpline numbers to offer assistance and information on this tragedy.
"They are also in touch with local authorities to confirm the number of Indian nationals affected.
Assistance is being provided to the next of kin of those affected in getting appropriate visa to New Zealand," the source said adding additional information are being ascertained.
Earlier, an official release said that in a letter addressed to his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern, Mr Modi expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the bereaved in the dastardly attack.
Prime Minister Modi offered heartfelt prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured and underscored "India’s solidarity with the friendly people of New Zealand at this difficult time".
Mr Modi expressed his deep shock and sadness at the loss of scores of innocent lives in the "heinous terrorist attack at the places of worship in Christchurch" on Friday.
The Prime Minister stressed India’s strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations "and of all those who support such acts of violence".
He also said "hatred and violence have no place in diverse and democratic societies".
Gunmen opened fire inside two mosques in Christchurch during afternoon prayers on Friday killing at least 49 people and injuring several.
