New Delhi, Jul 29 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court that Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association president Mian Abdul Qayyum will be released from detention on Thursday.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Jammu and Kashmir administration, told a bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul that the Union Territory administration has decided to immediately release Mian Qayyum. However, he will stay in Delhi till August 7 and will not issue any statement.
Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for Mian Qayum, urged that his client be released tomorrow so that his family members in Delhi can receive him, to which Mr Mehta agreed.
Qayoom was detained on August 7 last year following the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35 A from Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, Qayoom had been lodged at Tihar Jail in Delhi.
On Monday, the Central Government had informed the Supreme Court that the Qayoom would be released after August 6, after which the Top Court asked the Solicitor General to come with instructions from the UT administration.
