When will Mallya appear in courtroom? SC asks Govt

New Delhi, Oct 5 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday asked the counsel of fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya to inform the court by November 2 about the "secret proceedings" taking place in the United Kingdom against his client and when he will appear personally to the court to receive the sentence for contempt of court.
In Monday's hearing, the government submitted to the bench headed by UU Lalit that it is not aware of any "secret proceedings" in the UK which is delaying the liquor baron's return to India.
The government told the bench that as the extradition process was completed, other proceedings have been initiated in the UK of which neither the government was informed nor made a party to it.
The UK's court has already upheld the extradition of Mallya to India.
Mallya and his firm – Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, have loan defaults of over Rs 10,000 crore to a consortium of Indian banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI).
He has been charged cheating, criminal conspiracy, money laundering and diversion of loan funds.
Mallya was declared a fugitive offender under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act.
The Supreme Court in 2017 had held Mallya guilty of contempt for wilful disobedience of the court’s order to come clean about his assets and not disclosing a sum of 40 million dollars (₹600 crore) he received from British liquor major Diageo Plc following his resignation as Chairman of United Spirits Limited in February 2016.
