Hathras case: SC asks UP govt to file affidavit detailing witness protection plan

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday assured a smooth investigation into the alleged Hathras gang-rape, murder case and asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file an affidavit detailing the witness protection plan on ground in this case.
A bench headed by CJI, S A Bobde, termed the incident "shocking" and "horrible".
Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, senior lawyer and law officer appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, told the Top court that there are narratives within narratives spread by social media and that even a TV journalist was heard coaxing the victim's relative to seek more compensation.
The SG said there are vicious and motivated false narratives being spread by vested interests about the incident and that is the reason why the UP government decided to recommend CBI probe.
To this, the CJI observed, 'We are hearing the petitioners because the incident is shocking and extraordinary. We are also appreciating your assistance but you may not have the locus. Let us hear the petitioners also.'
The Supreme Court today asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file an affidavit detailing the witness protection efforts on ground and who will be the lawyer representing the victim's families in the court and fixed the matter for further hearing after a week.
It was hearing a petition filed by S Dubey seeking a CBI probe into the recent brutal Hathras incident in Uttar Pradesh.
