Gangster Vikas Dubey encounter: Former SC judge to head inquiry panel

New Delhi, Jul 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday approved the formation of an inquiry commission headed by its former judge BS Chauhan to investigate the encounter of Kanpur gangster Vikas Dubey and five of his aides.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government suggested Justice Chauhan's name to the court.
A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde approved the suggestion.
The other two members of the inquiry commission would be – former high court judge Justice (retd) Shashi Kant Agarwal and retired Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh K L Gupta.
The Apex Court said that the commission will start its work in a week and will have to submit its report in two months.
The top court said the inquiry commission will submit its report to the apex court as well the state government under the Commission of Inquiry Act.
The apex court said scope of investigation to be conducted by the inquiry commission should be wide enough.
During the hearing, Justice Bobde said that he had also heard several cases with Justice Chauhan and he would have also suggested the same.
Petitioners Anup Prakash Awasthi and Ghanshyam Upadhyay said that they have full faith in Justice Chauhan.
