Lathicharge on BHU students: Cong demands sacking of VC

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) Strongly condemning the police lathicharge against students of the Banaras Hindu university who were protesting against eve teasing incidents in the university, the congress today urged President Ram Nath Kovind to dismiss the Vice Chancellor and institute a probe by a sitting High court judge. Addressing a joint press conference along with the DUSU president Rocky Tuseed and vice president Kunal, AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari said the role of the Vice Chancellor of the university had been highly insensitive in the matter. 'The President should immediately take cognizance of the matter and sack the VC of the university. This is an extremely sensitive matter. A probe headed by a high court judge should be instituted in the incident and strict action be taken against the culprits,' he said. Asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make his stand clear on the incident, Mr Tewari said, 'since the incident happened in the parliamentary constituency of PM Narendra Modi who has given the slogan 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', he should make his stand clear on it. It should be clarified as to why a PM who tweets on every issue is silent in the matter. He should explain to the country his stand on the issue.' Mr Tewari said that the results of the student union elections in universities in Hyderabad, Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab etc. should make it clear to the Narendra Modi government that the youth are disillusioned with him. 'The promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party to the youth before the Lok Sabha elections have not been fulfilled. Hence, youth of the country is disappointed with the Modi government. The youth is angry with this Government which promise to provide two crore jobs to them every year but have not been able to give jobs to two thousand people,' Mr Tewari said. He said that the BJP did not have faith in democracy and wanted to remain in power by following a policy of oppression. 'The youth of the country have now realised the intentions of the NDA Government and have now risen up in protest against its policies. Today the Modi Government stands exposed before the youth,' he said. Police resorted to lathicharge on the students holding protests at BHU on the demand for providing security for women in the campus. After the attempts by the students to meet Vice Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi failed, the protesting girls started marching towards his residence. This was followed by a police lathicharge against students which led to violence in which many girl students, journalists and policemen were injured. UNI AR SHK 1625
