New Delhi, Nov 18 (UNI) Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday said India's HIV prevention model can be replicated by other countries for targeted interventions programme as per local settings and adopted in other prevention and disease control initiatives, where multiple parties can work together to achieve a common goal.
Dr Harsh Vardhan said the world has been shown a model by India and expressed happiness that the provision of generic anti-retroviral drugs from India to the world has had a significant impact in bringing the HIV epidemic under control. He felt that global AIDS action in general has been the apex of the innovation in service delivery model to which social organisations contributed.
Addressing a ministerial meeting of the Global Prevention Coalition (GPC) for HIV Prevention through video conference, he acknowledged that global AIDS response has shown remarkable success in reducing new infections, improving access to prevention services for key population and treatment services for people living with HIV (PLHIV) and reducing AIDS-related mortality among others, the health ministry said in a statement.
He told the meeting that global AIDS action has succeeded in reducing new infections, improving access to prevention services for key populations and providing treatment and treatment services for people living with HIV.
Referring to the United Nations General Assembly's commitment to eradicate AIDS by 2030, he said global AIDS action has also resulted in reducing cases of AIDS-related deaths, HIV infection from mother to children, and has achieved remarkable success in creating an environment conducive to fighting HIV-like epidemics.
Hosted by UNAIDS and UNFPA on behalf of the Global HIV Prevention Coalition (GPC), the conference this year holds significance in achieving the 2016 UNGA commitment to end AIDS by 2030. Member States of GPC had agreed to reduce new adult HIV infections by 75 per cent at the end of 2020 from 2010 levels.
Regarding India's unique HIV prevention model, he said it is based on the concept of social contract whereby the targeted intervention programme is implemented. The objective of this programme is to provide far-reaching service, counselling and testing and ensure linkage with HIV care in collaboration with NGOs.
