Corona tightens noose, over 97,000 new infections, active cases cross 10 lakh-mark

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) As Corona shows no signs of abating world wide, India recorded an unprecedented spike of over 97,000 fresh nCoV cases crossing the 51 lakh-mark, while the active case load has now crossed 10 lakh mark, the Health Ministry update said here on Thursday.
The tally now stands at 51,18,254 with a whopping 97,894 new additions in the past 24 hours. The country now houses 10,09,976 active cases.
But the country is on a too with 82,719 cured and discharged taking the total to above 40 lakhs, with the figure standing at 40,25,079.
Fatality count also rose to 83,198 with 1,132 more people succumbing to the virus since Wednesday, the government data added.
In terms of percentage, the active cases are 19.73 pc, while recovered at 78.64 per cent, and the toll stands at 1.63 per cent.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as many as 11,36,613 samples tested positive in the past 24 hours, taking the total cumulative samples tested since the beginning of the pandemic till Wednesday to 6,05,65,728.
Maharashtra continues to remain the worst affected state accounting for 2,97,506 active cases, while its death toll has mounted past 30,000 to stand at at 30,883.Andhra Pradesh at the second spot now has 90,279 active cases, while 5105 lives have been claimed by the virus in the southern state.
Maharashtra (17,559) contributed more than one-fifths of the new recoveries (21.22 per cent) while the States of Andhra Pradesh (10,845), Karnataka (6,580), Uttar Pradesh (6,476) and Tamil Nadu (5,768) contributed 35.87 per cent of the new recoveries, a statement said.
As many as 1,132 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours. With 474 new cases of mortality in,Maharashtra accounted for more than 40 per cent of the new deaths followed by Uttar Pradesh (86), Punjab (78), Andhra Pradesh (64) and West Bengal (61) jointly contributed 25.5 per cent of the fatalities in the past 24 hours.
Globally, COVID continues to unleash its 'multiplication impact' from which retrieval is slow and uncertain as number of cases has topped 29.7 million, while the deaths have increased to over 9,39,000 on Thursday, Johns Hopkins University said.
The total number of cases stood at 29,760,579 and the fatalities rose to 939,427, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 6,629,702 and 196,752 respectively, according to the CSSE.
India is currently in the second place in terms of cases at 5,020,359, while the country's death toll stood at 82,066.
In terms of cases, Brazil ranks third (4,419,083), and is followed by Russia (1,075,485), Peru (738,020), Colombia (736,377), Mexico (680,931), South Africa (653,444), Spain (614,360) and Argentina (589,012) the CSSE figures showed.
The other countries with over 20,000 deaths were the Brazil (134,106), Mexico (71,978), the UK (41,773), Italy (35,645), France (31,056) and Peru (30,927).
