COVID cases cross 50 lakh, Delhi HC refuses to conduct CLAT online

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) The number of Novel Coronavirus cases reached over 50 lakh on Wednesday, registering 50,20,359 positive patients of the lethal disease, even as the Delhi High Court dismissed a petition, seeking direction to conduct the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), 2020 online, in view of COVID-19.
The day also marked the highest single day recoveries in the country, after 82,961 COVID-19 patients were cured and discharged from home/facility isolation and hospitals in the past 24 hours, propelling the recovery rate to 78.53 per cent.
Against the 9,95,933 active cases in the country, the total recovered cases stood at 39,42,360. A total of 90,123 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours in the country, while the death toll reached 82,066, after 1290 more people succumbed to the contagion.
The Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) got the go ahead of the Controller General of India (DCGI) for resumption of human trials of the COVID-19 vaccine in India.
The Institute is conducting the second and third phase of human trials in India for the Corona vaccine, being developed jointly by the Oxford University of Britain and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. On September 6, AstraZeneca stopped all on-site testing after a volunteer suffered a spinal problem during ongoing testing for the vaccine in the UK.
Govind Ramanan, a CLAT applicant, who completed his LLB in 2016 and sought to apply for a post graduation in law, filed the petition before the High Court, seeking direction to quash the notification issued by the consortium regarding the CLAT 2020 examination.
Delhi High Court Justice Jayant Nath, after dismissing the petition through video-conferencing, said 'It is clear that the pleas of the petitioner are misplaced and cannot be a ground for postponing/change the exams of mode to conduct the exam.'
Maharashtra continued to top the COVID charts, registering 10,97,856 cases, including 20,482 new patients. The death toll also surged to 30,409, after 515 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours.
Andhra Pradesh ranked second on the list across the country, registering total 5,83,925 cases, including
8,846 new patients. The death toll increased to 5,041, including 69 fresh deaths.
The cumulative tally of Coronavirus positive cases reached 5,19,860 in Tamil Nadu, after the state registered 5,652 fresh cases, while the death toll mounted to 8,559, with 57 more fatalities.
Uttar Pradesh reported 6339 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the total to 3,30,265 cases, while the death toll touched 4690, with 86 fresh casualties.
Palghar Collector Manik Gursal issued prohibitory order restricting public gathering, including those in forms of protests, so as to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The ongoing investigation of the Narcotics Control Bureau(NCB) into the drugs angle in Sushant Singh Rajput case was halted, as a member of the probe team tested COVID-19 positive.
Senior BJP leader and former Member of Parliament C P Radhakrishnan tested positive for COVID-19. He was admitted to a private hospital for treatment in the textile city of Coimbatore.
Himachal Prasdesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur informed the state Assembly that Council of Ministers decided to withdraw the E-Covid Registration system to allow entry of people in the state opening state border on the direction of Union Government.
Telangana Legislative Council was adjourned sine die, due to fear of COVID-19 spread after a few members and staff had tested positive for the contagious virus.
Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu announced additional incentive of Rs 1500 to Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) for COVID-19 related work.
Tripura Tribal Welfare and Forest Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia tested positive for COVID-19 and was currently undergoing treatment. He is the first minister of the state to have got infected with coronavirus.
The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) confirmed reaching an agreement to deliver 100 million doses of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V to India, specifying that the deal was reached with India's Dr Reddy's.
