New Delhi, Mar 20 (UNI) Indian government on Wednesday welcomed the arrest of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi in the UK and said the progress in the case is being followed actively.
In response to media queries regarding the arrest of Nirav Modi, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said: "We welcome the fact that Nirav Modi has been arrested by the United Kingdom authorities pursuant to the arrest warrant issued by the Westminster Magistrate Court".
He further said - "Government of India continues to actively follow up this matter with the authorities concerned in the UK, with a view to have Nirav Modi extradited to India at the earliest."
Earlier, reacting to reports of arrest fugitive Indian diamantaire Nirav Modi in London, BJP leader and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said it is not just difficult but 'impossible to get away' from the 'chowkidar' - a reference to firmness with which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pursuing all such cases and corruption related issues.
'Chowkidar se bachna mushkil hi nahi namumkin hai,' Mr Prasad said on micro-blogging site Twitter.
BJP leader P Murlidhar Rao also said "not only Nirav Modi or Vijay Mallya", the BJP-led regime is committed to take firm actions against any economic offenders.
Nirav Modi, 48, wanted by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a loan fraud of approximately Rs 14,000 crore from a branch of Punjab National Bank in Mumbai, was arrested from the Holborn area of central London on Tuesday.
The opposition Congress, however, termed the arrest as a move clearly aimed at the coming Lok Sabha elections and alleged that said that it was the BJP-led NDA Government which allowed him to escape.
