Godman remanded to police custody in rape case

Godman remanded to police custody in rape case

New Delhi, Sep 14 (UNI) A Delhi Court on Friday remanded self styled godman Ashu Bhai to three-day police remand on charges of allegedly gangraping a woman and her 16-year old daughter at his ashram in Hauz Khas area here.
Police have registered a case under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act against Ashu and his son Samar. After registration of FIR, the godman allegedly fled to Ghaziabad. Police traced both the godman and his son to Ajnara Apartments and then handed them over to the Crime Branch of Delhi Police. According to police, there was sufficient evidence against the godman who allegedly committed rape with the mother and daughter at his ashram.
On September 11, the woman appeared in a South Delhi court and recorded her statement. Police teams would be visiting the ashram to verify the claims of the lady. The woman has claimed that the ashram was set up in the basement of a building. Ashu Bhai sold incense sticks, candles and Shani yantras there along with his manager Ravi Shankar. The woman claimed that many women were also called to this ashram.
Followers of Ashu Bhai told the police that he had changed his name from Asif Khan to Ashu Bhai and started practising astrology. He would charge a huge amount for performing rituals. It is alleged that in the early 1990 Ashu used to stay in a JJ colony in Wazirpur and run a cycle-repair shop there. After some time, he shifted to a market in Sarai Rohilla in North Delhi to practise astrology and started making followers. Ashu was contacted by some television channels who promoted him as a specialist in removing bad luck.
