River rejuvenation, restoration not easy; CPEC riskiest environmental project in history: Environmentalist

New Delhi, Jan 9 (UNI) Rejuvenation and restoration of a river is a challenging task, it cannot be completed in a few years' span because of the various factors that the process usually depends on and therefore projects to clean rivers like Ganga and Yamuna can take decades, said author and environmentalist Bane Singh on Saturday.
Over a thousand such programmes (river cleanliness) are going on around the world but very few of them have emerged as a success story. Because along with huge funding, the success of such projects depends on factors like riverine ecology, environment, hydrology, civil engineering, social sciences and geomorphology. This is the reason why India has not been able to deliver a positive result in this sphere, the award-winning author of four books, who has been associated with the world's largest environmental endeavour, the National Mission for Clean Ganga said so in a virtual session organised by Vitasta Publishing and hosted by UNI, this evening.
The author further emphasised on the environmental impact of China's ambitious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Brahmaputra Canal Project and said that the projects have greater environmental impacts due to their enormous pressure on global resources.
