New Delhi, Jul 30 (UNI) The Election Commission on Thursday announced that the by-elections
for the two Rajya Sabha seats vacated following the death of Rajya Sabha member Beni Prasad Verma from Uttar Pradesh and Rajya Sabha member MP Veerendra Kumar from Kerala, will be held on August 24.
In a statement issued here, the Election Commission said that notification will be issued on August 6 for the by-elections for these two seats, while last date of making nominations is August 13 and scrutiny of nomination papers will be on August 14.
Last date for withdrawal of candidatures is August 17, the poll panel said.
According to the statement, voting for the by-elections will be held on August 24 and the counting of votes will begin at 1700 hrs on August 24 and the election process will end by August 26.
The Commission has also directed the Chief Secretaries concerned to depute a senior officer from the states to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the elections.
Former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha Member Beni Prasad Verma died on March 27 this year while MP Veerendra Kumar died on May 28.
Verma's tenure was till July 4, 2022 while Kumar's term was till April 2, 2022.
