EAM, UNGA 79th session President Philemon Yang discuss need for reformed multilateralism

New Delhi, Feb 5 (UNI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday met with visiting President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (PGA) Philemon Yang during which they discussed issues related to the UN, including the need for reformed multilateralism.

In a post on X, the EAM said they also exchanged views on regional, global and developmental issues.

“Pleasure to meet @UN_PGA Philemon Yang this afternoon in Delhi.

“Discussed various issues on @UN agenda, including the need for reformed multilateralism.

“Also exchanged views on regional, global and developmental issues.

“Appreciate his leadership and guidance at the UN.”

Earlier, Yang in a post on X said on his arrival on Tuesday:

“Delighted to arrive in the vibrant city of New Delhi, marking the beginning of my visit to the Republic of India.

“Eager to experience the cultural richness of this diverse country, steeped in profound history, and to engage in discussions with senior government officials and the United Nations country team.”

PGA Philemon Yang is on an India visit at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

During his Feb 4 – 7 visit, PGA Yang will also pay a courtesy call on President Droupadi Murmu, a statement said.

Yang previously served as the Prime Minister of Cameroon.

The PGA assumed office on 10 September 2024. Under his Presidency, the United Nations adopted "A Pact for the Future”, a vision document for realising "multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow.”

Apart from New Delhi, Yang will be visiting Bengaluru. PGA is scheduled to visit Infosys and the Indian Institute of Science, where he would have the opportunity to interact with experts on India’s innovations in various fields such as sustainability, digital public infrastructures, etc.
