Cong making efforts to woo rebel AAP MPs in Punjab

New Delhi, Aug 28 (UNI) In a bid to steal a march over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, the Congress is making increasing efforts to woo rebel AAP MPs Harindar Singh Khalsa and Dharamvira Gandhi, sources said. Efforts have been going on by the party leadership in Punjab, including the Punjab PCC chief Amarinder Singh, to convince the rebel AAP MPs to join the Congress party, a move seen in political circles as aimed at boosting the chances of the party in the coming assembly elections in Punjab, scheduled early next year. Sources said over the past few weeks, there have been hectic deliberations by Punjab Congress leaders, including Capt Amarinder Singh, AICC incharge for Punjab Asha Kumari and the chairman of the coordination committee for the Punjab polls Ambika Soni with the top leadership of the party over the issue. The sources said that a meeting of the Congress coordination committee held at the residence of Congress vice- president Rahul Gandhi recently where party political strategist Prashant Kishore was also present, reached a general agreement over the need for efforts to woo the rebel AAP MPs into the Congress . Sources said after the go ahead by the high command, the state Congress leaders have been sending feelers to the AAP rebels to join the Congress party. Party leaders feel that the joining of the AAP rebels in the Congress would provide a major fillip to the Congress, which has in recent months, has been concerned over the rising popularity graph of the AAP in Punjab, especially among the youth of the state. Sources said that the huge response to the rallies and public meetings by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and other party leaders like Bhagwant Mann have evoked a feeling of concern among the Congress. In this context, Congress leaders from the state feel that the entry of the rebel AAP MPs would boost the morale of the party cadres in the state ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, scheduled to be held early next year. Infact, the Congress has also been making efforts to woo rebel BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who last month resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat over not being given a role by the BJP in Punjab. Sources said the efforts to woo Sidhu towards the Congress have intensified after talks between the cricketer turned politician and AAP hit a logjam. Political observers say that an entry of Sidhu and the two rebel AAP MPs would definitely give the Congress a much needed shot in the arm ahead of the Assembly polls. UNI AR AKC ADG 1030
