BJP, Shiv Sena in jubilant mood over victories in Maharashtra local body polls

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) The Shiv Sena and BJP leaders in Mumbai and also in the national capital were in jubilant mood today after Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit and the saffron party - though contesting separately - notched convincing leads in crucial civic body polls in the metropolis and other key cities across Maharashtra. "People of Mumbai, with their wisdom, have brought the Shiv Sena to power on its own" a joyous Sena MP Anil Desai told television channels in Mumbai celebrating the convincing leads Sena had established in at least 90 wards in Mumbai while the BJP was leading in over 50 wards decimating Congress and NCP in the elections to the 227-seat BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation. While the Congress remained a distant third with leads in only 20 wards, Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena of Raj Thackeray were far behind. Sachin Ahir of NCP sought to blame the Congress for the poor show and said, "Both Congress and NCP should have gone for alliance". Mr Ahir suggested that the intra-party squabbling in the Congress between Sanjay Nirupam and leaders like Narayan Rane and Gurudas Kamat have contributed to the Congress getting humbled in the civic polls. Worse, for Congress, its traditional stronghold Pune also seemed to slip away into the grip of arch rivals BJP. In Pune, the educational hub of Maharashtra and known for cosmopolitan characteristic, BJP was leading in 50 wards when reports last came in with Congress reduced to poor third with only two seats and Shiv Sena probably making it to 8 seats. Amid celebration mood in Mumbai, several Sena workers told TV journalists that their party should walk out of the alliance in the state government headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. However, while they left the decision to party chief Mr Uddhav Thackeray, who in the run up to the polls were involved in one-upmanship with Mr Fadnavis, some party leaders have said Sena's differences with BJP was hardly "vaicharik (ideological)". Mumbai had witnessed a record 55 per cent voter turnout in the civic elections. Voting this year was also conducted on February 16 for zilla parishads of Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli, Beed, Nanded, Osmanabad, Latur, Buldhana, Yavatmal, Wardha, Chandrapur and parts of Gadchiroli. The BJP leaders in Delhi were also in joyous mood over party's success in other towns like Nashik, Nagpur, Amravati and Akola. Some enthusiastic among them described it as "people's endorsement to demonetisation and other pro-people policies of the Modi government". The saffron party leaders in Delhi also make light of Maharashtra BJP president Raosaheb Danve's visit to 'Matoshree' (Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's residence) yesterday. The refrain being, Danve had visited Uddhav on a "personal visit" to invite for his son's wedding. UNI DEVN SB 1347
