Bill to merge 3 Ayurveda educational & research institutes in Gujarat introduced in RS

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) The Ayurveda, Education and Research Institute Bill 2020 to merge three Ayurveda institutes in Jamnagar of Gujarat and giving it the status of an institution of national importance, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
This Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha in the last session.
Introducing the Bill in the Upper House, Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan said it would facilitate the running of this institute and get help from the Central government.
He said the Bill aims at merging the Gujarat Ayurveda University Postgraduate Ayurveda Education and Research Institute, Sri Gulab Kunwarba Ayurveda College and the Indian Pharmaceutical Sciences Institute.
The new set up would be established in the campus of the Gujarat Ayurveda University.
Initiating discussion on the Bill, Congress member L Hanumanthaiah welcomed the Government's decision to make an institute of national importance for Ayurveda education, but also pointed out about the shortage of
post-graduate teachers and researchers in this field.
He said the Ayurvedic products are estimated to have a market of 10 billion USD by 2022, adding 'We need
to improve research and training.'
Expressing surprise on the exclusion of Kerala from this Bill, the Congress lawmaker asked whether the guidelines under this Bill would be different from that of Ayurveda University.
He said Tamil Nadu is a pioneer in Siddha system of treatment. Why not make such an institute in Tamil Nadu, he asked.
Mr Hanumanthaiah also said that Ayurveda graduates are jobless today. Clinical trials were not carried out adequately in Ayurveda and the Government needs to pay attention on these issues. The debate remained inconclusive and will be taken up again on September 16.
