Agusta chopper deal: SC nixes plea for SIT scrutiny

New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday negated a Public Interest Litigation seeking a Special Investigation Team probe in the Chhattisgarh Government purchase of VIP helicopters manufactured by AgustaWestland.

The bench comprised Justices AK Goel and UU Lalit.

Non Governmental Organisation Swaraj Abhiyan and others had alleged that the Raman Singh dispensation had purchased the choppers in dubious fashion through a sham tender.

The Chhattisgarh government had in justification asserted that the choppers were of superior quality and 24 of them were flying in Indian skies.

Swaraj Abhiyan had alleged that $1.324-million was paid in excess for the choppers. It had also submitted Right To Information records pertaining to the $5 million deal.

Appearing for the NGO, Prashant Bhushan, contended that one person had represented the three competitive bidders. He had also contended that the deal had caused a huge loss to the exchequer.

Mr Bhushan had alleged mala fide by Abhishek Singh, the son of the Chief Minister.
