349 Congress workers including 56 MPs detained, released

New Delhi, July 21 (UNI) Delhi Police on Thursday detained 56 Congress Member of Parliaments (MPs) from different places after they were gathered and held protest to show solidarity with their party president Sonia Gandhi who was summoned by Enforcement Directorate (ED) for appearance before the probe agency in National Herald case.
According to Sagar Preet Hooda, Special Commissioner of Police, L&O division, Zone-II Delhi, total 349 Congress workers including 56 MPs were detained from different places under section 65 DP Act to maintain public order in the area and they were released after following necessary legal formalities. Intimation regarding detention of the MPs/MLAs was being sent to the respective competent authority.
The police came to know through sources that Congress workers would hold protests as party president was summoned to appear before the ED office today. On the basis of this input, police sent a letter addressed to the organizer, All India Congress Committee (AICC) and informed that large gatherings at around Akbar Road in New Delhi cannot be permitted as prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC were in force in the area, said Hooda.
