New Delhi, Nov 17 (UNI) In a move to curb the vehicular emission contributing to toxicity in the air, as many as 1,000 private CNG buses will be hired by the Delhi Government, Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Wednesday.
The decision came after a high-level meeting with the officials of the department concerned.
"The buses will increase the frequency and encourage people to take public transport. The process will start from Thursday," Rai said at a press conference here.
Besides, all schools, colleges, educational institutions, coaching centres and libraries will remain physically shut till further orders, according to the directions announced by the Minister.
The Delhi government has also extended Work From Home (WFH) for its employees and banned the construction and demolition activities till November 21, acting upon the directions of the Centre's Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).
Delhi’s overall air quality index (AQI) on Wednesday morning remained in the 'very poor' quality, recorded at 379 at 0700 hrs, according to the Ministry of Earth Sciences' air quality monitor SAFAR.
The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) had issued a slew of directions on late Tuesday night, including physical closure of schools, colleges and educational institutions in NCR states.
It also said that only five of 11 thermal power plants located within a 300 km radius of Delhi will remain operational till November 30.
