'Narmada Andalon' will continue till settlement of displaced families: Medha Patkar

'Narmada Andalon' will continue till settlement of displaced families: Medha Patkar

New Delhi, Sept 21 (UNI) Social activist Medha Patkar today said the dedication of Narmada dam to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday on September 17 does not end the 'Narmada Bachao Andalon'. Speaking at public function here Ms Patkar said, "The agitation and struggle for this dam has been going on for the past 32 years. And the fight is ongoing and will continue till the aim of total settlement of all uprooted people is achieved." She said," Sardar Sarovar dam on Narmada river is a fallacy. Mr Modi is quoting fifty-six years of history of the dam from the Nehurivan era when the foundation of the dam was laid by the first prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. There were issues regarding the dam then and still those issues persist. The villages uprooted then are still seeking rehabilitation." 'As a matter of fact, earlier the height of the dam was 90 m but over the course of time it was increased to 110 m making it the world's second largest and India's largest dam, without taking the people into know, Ms Patkar said. 'The matter is pending in the Supreme court which had ordered that the people or rather the peasants be given 'land for land" . But later, the government said it would give cash for land thus eating away the cultivable land of the farmers on which they could grow multiple crops. This way ryots lost their precious land for a mere lakhs of rupees,' she stated. 'But the "Narmamda Bachao andalon" has had affected 14,000 to 15,000 displaced families getting five acres of land in lieu of land. We want that all should get such benefit, only then the purpose of our agitation would be complete,' she remarked. More UNI SY PY SHK 2202
