Dame Maureen objects to Helen Mirren being cast as ex-Israeli PM in her biopic 'Golda'

Los Angeles, Jan 5 (UNI) Actor Dame Maureen Lipman has castigated the makers of movie Golda, based on the life of first woman Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir, for giving the titular role to Dame Helen Mirren, stating that she was not Jewish.
In the latest row over the casting of non-Jews in Jewish roles, a practice described by the critics as "Jewface," Lipman said that she was uncomfortable with Mirren being given the film’s titular role.
"The Jewishness of the character is so integral. I'm sure she will be marvellous but it would never be allowed for Ben Kingsley to play Nelson Mandela. You just couldn’t even go there. Perhaps you need to have some sort of panel of people who say this is not acceptable, this is acceptable," the 75-year-old told the Jewish Chronicle.
According to Maureen, Jewish actors were overlooked for the role of Meir, who was the fourth ever Prime Minister of Israel and passed away in 1978 aged 80.

The first look of the movie was released recently, which showed 76-year-old Helen wearing prosthetics to transform her into the 80-year-old Israeli politician, who served as Prime Minister from 1969 to 1974.
