Two day seminar on Indian Cinema & Soft Power on May 3 at Raj Bhavan

Thane, Apr 27 (UNI) Two days seminar on 'Indian Cinema and Soft Power' to be held on May 3 at Rajbhavan
and Film Division, Mumbai, jointly organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and
FLAME university.
Globally renowned film director Shekhar Kapoor will be inaugurating this Seminar in the presence of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.
On May 4, the Union I & B Minister Anurag Thakur and lyricist Prasoon Joshi will be the Chief Guests at the Valedictory Session of this Seminar.

A joint release by the ICCR and FLAME stated on Wednesday that the seminar aims to bring together practitioners and scholars of Indian cinema and international relations to deliberate, discuss and dwell upon this extremely important yet often ignored discourse in contemporary times.
There is little doubt that cinema is a pivotal instrument of soft power. Hollywood, for instance, has long been a vehicle to convey and spread American value systems and their influence. Indeed, scholars have noted that the US has employed movies, radio, soap operas during the Cold War, to influence audiences in its own ideology and geopolitical ends. Such use by nation states of their own cinema to enhance their international appeal has only increased over time.

Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe President of the ICCR and Prof Yugank Goyal Associate Professor at FLAME University stated that recently, scholarly work has also focussed on the rising soft power of cinema coming from other countries like China, Korea, Middle East for instance. This discourse is relatively unexplored in the Indian context. There is no doubt that the extensive reach of Indian Cinema and its potential to cultivate a cultural 2 sensitivity towards India, people of India and Indian culture. Yet, it is a fact that much mote scholarly work is needed to evolve a more enlightened understanding of the larger issues involved here, both in movie-making and in policy design.
The session in this Seminar will include Cinematic Colonialism: Global and Indian Cinema through Western Lens , Indian Cinema as a Vehicle for Spreading Awareness about India Abroad , Global Influence of Indian Cinematic Music , Regional Cinema and its Global Influence , Enhancing Indian Cinema's engagement with Foreign Audience and Advanced Technology, it added.
