India pavilion opens in Cannes Film Market

Cannes, May 18 (UNI) The Indian film industry has vowed to make the country the global capital of the creative economy by combining its rich talent in storytelling and technology.
"The land of storytelling is in the spotlight of the world today," said Union Information and Broadcasting, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur at the opening of the India pavilion at the Cannes film festival yesterday.
In a video message from New Delhi, Mr Thakur said India offered "an oasis of opportunities" for filmmakers from around the world. The India pavilion in the Cannes Film Market, the world's largest such market, was inaugurated by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L Murugan.
"We are witnessing an era when Indian content is going from local to global," said Dr Murugan, who is leading a star-studded Indian delegation to the Cannes festival, which kicked off on Tuesday. "The National Centre of Excellence for
Animation, Gaming, Visual Effects and Comics is in the pipeline," he added. The centre is expected to come up in Mumbai.
"India's entertainment industry is poised to grow at a rate of 11.4 per cent this year," Dr Murugan said while underlining the central government's commitment to building India as a global hub for content in film, television, animation, visual effects, Virtual Reality, performing arts and video games.
The theme of the India pavilion this year is 'Showcasing India's Creative Economy'. India's creative economy, measured by the number of people working in various creative occupations, is estimated to contribute nearly 8 per cent of the country's jobs, much higher than the corresponding share in countries like Mexico (1.5 per cent), Turkey (1 per cent), South Korea (1.9 per cent) and Australia (2.1 per cent).
Among those present at the inauguration ceremony was the Cannes Film Market's new executive director Guillaume Esmiol. The Indian delegation this year includes actors Khushboo Sundar, Sara Ali Khan and Urvashi Rautela. "Cinema and art transcends language, region and nationality," said Sara Ali Khan.
"Cinema is inextricably tied to the life of every Indian," said India's Ambassador to France, Jawed Ashraf, while emphasising on the need to tap India's potential in Information Technology to reap the benefits of Artificial Intelligence in the film industry.
Designed by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, the India pavilion in the colours of the national flag this year is inspired by Saraswati Yantra, the abstract representation of the Goddess Saraswati, the keeper of knowledge, music, art and learning.
The poster of the 54th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa, scheduled to be held from November 20 to 28, was released on the occasion. The pavilion will host a number of panel discussions during the festival to promote India as a filming destination.
The Indian films in Cannes official selection this year are Anurag Kashyap's new film, 'Kennedy', in the Midnight Screenings section, 'Nehemich' by Kolkata-born Yudhajit Basu, an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, in La Cinef programme for film school productions from around the world, and the 1990 Manipuri film, 'Ishanou' (The Chosen One), directed by Aribam Shyam Sharma, in the Cannes Classics section for restored movies.
Independent director Kanu Behl's sophomore feature film, 'Agra', is part of the Directors' Fortnight parallel selection. Several new Indian film productions will be screened at the Cannes Film Market during the festival.
