Tripura: Agartala-Kolkata Kanchanjunga Express mows down male elephant

Agartala, Feb 10 (UNI) A 5-year-old male elephant was mowed down by the Kolkata-bound Kanchenjunga Express from Agartala on Saturday morning in the DM Para locality of Teliamura in Khowai district in the foothills of the Atharamura hill range, wildlife officials said here.
According to the report, the forest officials got a phone call from the villagers that the body of a wild elephant was found near DM Para School, and they were feared of attack by the elephant herd. They also informed the tusk was missing from the dead elephant, which indicated the involvement of poachers in the killing.
“We immediately rushed to the spot with all arrangements, anticipating the ravage of the elephant herds in the localities. But in recovery, it was confirmed that a tusk remained; apparently there was no action from human beings to kill, and the body was lying near the railway track,” Tapan Saha, Forest Beat Officer of Mungiakami, said.
