Meghalaya’s “whistling or singing” Kongthong village not entertainment but unique tradition

Shillong, Sep 27 (UNI) Meghalaya’s Kongthong, which is known as a “whistling or singing village”, is “not entrainment” but a unique tradition that needs to be researched and preserved, BJP Rajya Sabha member Rakesh Sinha said on Monday.
The Union Ministry of Tourism recently nominated Kongthong village for the World Tourism Organization’s “Best Tourism Villages" award along with two other villages in the country “This (whistling to call out names) is not entertainment and so this has to be researched and the tradition preserved,” Sinha said, adding he has already started the process to establish a central research laboratory and a museum in the village.
"I am going to approach the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and other ministries for creation of a laboratory and a museum in the village.The laboratory would conduct research on the unique tradition of the village and the museum would preserve some of the tunes and whistles for prosperity," he said after inaugurating an entry gate in the village in the presence of Meghalaya Khadi Village Industries Board Chairman, Gavin Mylliem.
