Explain deaths of 877 newborns, 61 mothers: Rights Commission tells Meghalaya government

Shillong, Oct 20 (UNI) The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has sent notices to the State Health and Family Welfare Department and Social Welfare Department to explain through a report cause of death of 877 newborns and 61 pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The notices were issued based on a petition filed by social activist Agnes Kharshiing who had sought intervention of the MHRC with regard to the large number of deaths of pregnant women and newborns in the State during the month of April 2020 till July 2020 due to diseases other than Coronavirus.
"The large number of deaths which raises serious issues of violation of human rights as Article 21 of the Constitution mandates for protection of life and personal liberty to every citizens and rights to life and health is a fundamental health rights and it is the paramount the duty of the State to protect and safeguard such rights of any individual," MHRC Member (Judicial) Baffindalyne Giri said, while issuing the notice has given the two departments 30 days time to submit its report before the commission.
