Shillong, June 29 (UNI) Trinamool Congress (TMC) national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday launched a scathing attack against Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, saying that the National People's Party (NPP)-led government is "not a double engine government but a double heist and a double robbery".
"This is not a double engine government but a double heist and a double robbery. Double engine government means no one will arrest no one. The central government can steal as much resources from Meghalaya as they want, the Meghalaya police will not hold them accountable and Conrad Sangma will do whatever he wants, the CBI will not harass him, this is double heist. We have to give a befitting reply to these people who have cheated us and we have to show them their place,” Banerjee said addressing his party workers on his maiden visit to the State.
Stating that the NPP government has completely ignored the state's interest, the TMC leader alleged that the NPP government has been a puppet in the hands of the BJP.
"The abodes of clouds have become a haven for the corrupt, we have to change that," he said.
“Under the false narrative of double engine government, they are doing double heist and double robbery. We elected Conrad Sangma with hope but he has become “CON-MAN Sangma”. The abode of clouds has become a heaven for the corrupt,” Banerjee said.
Attacking Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the TMC General Secretary told his party workers, "Have you seen the body language of the Chief Minister when he meets BJP top brass in Delhi? He is an elected Chief Minister representing 35 lakh Meghalayans, carrying their hopes and aspirations. Should he bow down to BJP leaders? Is this why Meghalaya voted for him? If the answer is no, please support AITC."
Banerjee said, "AITC’s only aim is to save Meghalaya from the divisive politics of the proxy BJP Government. Our only goal is also to empower the people, uphold the different ethnic cultures and celebrate the sacred land of Meghalaya."
Asserting that the All India Trinamool Congress is a national party, he said, "The Opposition will try and brand us as Bengali but I promise that Meghalaya will be run by the people of Meghalaya and not by Bengalis. Can the BJP put this on record that none of their governments will be run by Gujarat or Delhi?"
Dubbing the NPP government as “a virus” and the TMC as the "antidote", Banerjee said the TMC is the vaccine for the “NPP virus” that has adversely affected the state’s governance.
Giving a call to the people to oust the “proxy BJP government” fronted by the NPP, Banerjee said, 'The TMC is the only party that knows how to take the BJP head-on. We are the only ones who know how to show Amit Shah his place. And that’s why we have come here, to defeat divisive forces," Banerjee said.
On TMC's mission in Meghalaya, Banerjee said, "All India Trinamool Congress is the only party that knows how to take the BJP head-on. We are the only ones who know how to show Amit Shah his place. And that’s why we have come here, to defeat divisive forces."
Elaborating on the ‘Be The Change’ membership campaign wherein the people of Meghalaya can call on a phone number (9687796877) and extend their support, Abhishek Banerjee said, "Time has come for another independence in Meghalaya. The people here will not compromise on their self-respect and be at the mercy of other states."
"I am going to go back with a mind full of possibilities and a heart full of optimism that Meghalaya is on the cusp of Independence again. All India Trinamool Congress will put its entire weight behind the state unit. But each one of you has to make a commitment to yourself that in 2023, Meghalaya will show the world its power, capability, and strength. Be it 2023 or 2024, a democratic sun should rise in the East."
Earlier in the afternoon Banerjee also launched the party office at Lower Lachumiere. Though the party galvanised all its units across the state to bring in supporters to make the maiden visit of its General Secretary grand, four out of the 12 legislators gave Banerjee’s visit a miss.
The four TMC legislators who were missing were Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang, Shitlang Pale, Marthon D Sangma and Jimmy D Sangma.
Sources say these legislators are on their way out of TMC and are in talks with different regional parties.
