Bengal unit Congress president Somen Mitra's death leaves a vacuum in state politics

Kolkata, Jul 30 (UNI) West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Somendra Nath Mitra, popularly known as Somen Mitra, who passed away following cardiac arrest at a city hospital early today, would be cremated at the Nimtala crematorium in north Kolkata this afternoon, party leader Amitabh Chakraborty said.
According to a tentative schedule, the body will be taken from the Belle Vue hospital to 3, Lower Rawdon Street (Residence) and then to Bidhan Bhawan (party office at Moulali) and State Assembly around 1 to 1.30 PM before the body would be taken to the Nimtala burning ghat this afternoon.
Born on December 31, 1941 in Jessore district (now in Bangladesh), Mitra became president of the state Congress Committee for second time on September 22, 2018, when the party was facing exodus of leaders and losing support base following 2016 Assembly poll debacle.
