NEDA a failure, did not stop BJP-Cong share power in Chakma belt: MNF

NEDA a failure, did not stop BJP-Cong share power in Chakma belt: MNF

Lunglei (Mizoram), Nov 3 (UNI) MNF candidate for Lunglei South constituency Dr K Pachhunga on Saturday said the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) is a “failed concept” and hence in future, his party MNF may even avoid having any truck with the saffron outfit.
However, he said, this has less to do with BJP’s ‘communal politics’. The MNF leader said to give BJP the 'Hindu chauvinistic' tag is a ‘misnomer’ and at times, it has instead helped the BJP gain currency in some states in the country.
“As far as our MNF tie up in the NEDA is concerned, personally I find NEDA has failed as a concept in north east and especially in Mizoram. It did nothing when local Mizoram units of BJP and Congress shared power in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC),” Dr Pachhunga told UNI here.
About BJP’s alleged Hindutva agenda especially in the context of ensuing polls in Mizoram, he said: “It is some Congress leaders like Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla who for last 15 years kept talking about BJP being anti-Christian or so in Mizoram. Instead it helped BJP in the national level in states like UP and Gujarat and helped Lal Thanhawla and Congress party in predominant Christian stronghold Mizoram”.
“I don’t believe in such tagging. BJP’s pro-Hindutva or communal agenda is confined to politics. It is actually for votes. We Christians keep preaching worldwide, so Hindus also have a right to preach. But as a politician, I am opposed to the BJP,” said Dr Pachhunga, a former Chemistry lecturer in Lunglei Government college.
He said when NEDA headed by BJP with the personal initiatives of Amit Shah and Himanta Biswa Sarma was floated in Guwahati, "I had attended the inaugural meet".
“It was a good meeting. Leaders spoke. My leader and MNF chief Zoramthanga also addressed. NEDA was supposed to be an anti-Congress platform pushing regional identity of the tribal communities. But when it came to CADC politics, BJP and Congress came together. NEDA could not live up to my expectations,” the MNF leader said.
Headquartered at Kamalanagar or Chawngte, the Chakma Autonomous District Council is an autonomous council for ethnic Chakma people, formed under the sixth schedule to the Constitution on April 29, 1972. The Council exercises legislative, executive and judiciary powers over allotted departments within the territory of CADC.
It has an area of 686.25 square kilometers sharing international boundaries with Bangladesh and Myanmar.
For years now, the Chakmas have had confrontation with local Mizo groups.
