Kohima, Nov 12 (UNI) The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) of the ruling People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) has able to retain its seat of the Southern Angami-I Assembly Constituency under Kohima district in Nagaland, while its alliance BJP has lost its candidate in the Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency in the November 03 by-elections.
In the by-elections also show the defeat the regional giant Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) party, when its lone candidate Kikovi Kirha defeated to NDPP candidate in the Southern Angami-I Assembly Constituency, where NDPP candidate got the mandate of 4,773 votes, but Kirha got a total of 2,557 votes.
First-timer 43-year old Medo Yhokha of NDPP candidate polled 4,773 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Independent candidate Seyievilie Peter Zashumo by a close margin of 598 votes. Zashumo received 4,175 votes and NPF nominee Kikovi Kirha got 2,575 votes. 88 voters opted for None of the above (NOTA). The NDPP maintained its position as the by-election was after the death of its candidate Vikho-o Yhoshu, who was the Assembly Speaker.
The biggest blow to NPF party was when it lost one of the Assembly Seat in the Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency. The seat belonged to NPF party was represented by T. Torechu and a by-election was to be held for the death of Torechu and the Independent candidate T Yangseo Sangtam won by a margin of 1,527 votes to his nearest rival another Independent candidate S Kiusumew Yimchunger. The PDA consensus candidate Lirimong Sangtam fell in third place, receiving a total of 5,664 votes.
However, the defeat of the PDA alliance BJP party was a defeat of the ruling parties.
After completely erased in two consecutive general Assembly elections, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) tried its luck in the recently concluded by-election also in the Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency, reportedly in support of the NPF party, as NPF did not field any candidate The Congress candidate Khaseo Anar able to collect only 347 votes, against the winning Independent candidate who polled 8747 votes.
