BJP & Congress declare candidates for Nagaland by-polls

Kohima, Oct 14 (UNI) As the by-elections of two Assembly seats of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly coming closure, the political parties the BJP and Congress have announced their candidates for one of the two assembly seats for which by-elections are to be held on November 3.

According to BJP State unit party sources, they have announced the name of Lirimong Sangtam as the candidate for the by-election of the Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency, election of which was necessitated to fill the vacancy after the demise of incumbent legislator, late T Torechu of the Naga People’s Front on December 16, 2019.

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has announced the name of Khaseo Anar as its party candidate for the seat to the Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency.

Other political parties, including the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the main opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) were yet to officially declare their candidates.

Another by-election is scheduled in the state on the same day for the Southern Angami-1 Assembly Constituency, to fill the vacancy left by late Vikho-o Yhoshu, the former Nagaland Assembly Speaker, who passed away on December 30, 2019. He was a legislator from the ruling NDPP.

The last date for filing of nominations for the seats is October 16 while the last date for withdrawal is October 19.

Meanwhile, the by-elections to two Pungro-Kiphire Assembly constituency and Southern Angami-1 Assembly Constituency, in Nagaland are gaining momentum as political parties pick up political activities, as the poll fever is heating up in the camps of political parties, even as multi-cornered contest is expected in both the constituencies.
In Pungro-Kiphire constituency, reportedly there are nearly a dozen of intending candidates, mostly eyeing for the Bharatya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. While in Southern Angami-1 constituency, Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio is expected to take a final call on choosing the candidate. He is expected to pick his close aide.
