55 –yr undertrial dies in Tripura jail: Custodial death toll rises to 5 in nine months

Agartala, Jul 20 (UNI) The jail administration in Tripura has been accused of negligence towards the inmates and not following the prescribed manuals while dealing with the undertrial prisoners and convicts following the death of a 55 –yr old man in Kanchanpur Sub-divisional jail of North Tripura yesterday.
This is the 5th custodial death case under mysterious circumstances in Tripura during the last nine months. The death triggered unrest in North Tripura district administration. However, the state administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the case.
According to an official report, the deceased Dilip Das, a home guard, was arrested for allegedly raping a differently abled girl on May 14 last from Churaibari and the court sent him to Dharmanagar district jail. With the recent spurt in Covid cases, the jail authority has been re-accommodating the undertrial prisoners among the jails.
