Modi speaks to CM over COVID situation in Assam

Guwahati, Jul 3 (UNI) As Assam continued to record spike in number of COVID 19 cases, especially in main city Guwahati, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took stock of the situation from Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal over phone.

The Chief Minister informed the Prime Minister about the present COVID-19 situation in the State and said though the number of COVID-19 positive cases are surging, the State Government is fully geared up to render best possible health care services to the patients.

He also apprised the PM about the dedicated health facilities being developed in the State to deal with COVID-19 cases.

The Prime Minister expressed solidarity with the people of the State and said the Central Government stands shoulder to shoulder with the efforts of the Assam Government to overcome the challenging situations.

Meanwhile, the first plasma bank for COVID 19 positive patients in the state has been started at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here today, state Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma informed.

The first convalescent donor was a doctor of the GMCH, who was the first doctor in the state to be infected with the virus.

“My gratitude to Dr Lithikesh for donating his plasma, and to the team who is working on this bank. I encourage cured patients to come forward and donate,” the minister added.

Though there are no patients needing plasma therapy at the moment, the sharp increase in the number of cases, especially in main city Guwahati, had led the state Health department to prepare for the treatment protocol in advance.

The number of recovered COVID 19 patients increased to 6327 with 221 discharges during the day.

No new case was confirmed by the Health department till late in the evening as the overall COVID 19 tally remained at 9434 and deaths at 14.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sonowal today visited the COVID Care Centres being set up by the Health Department at IIT, Guwahati, and Maniram Dewan Trade Centre here in view of rising numbers of COVID 19 positive cases in Guwahati and took stock of the arrangements put in place at the Centres.

State Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, his deputy minister Pijush Hazarika and other senior officials of the Health Department who were present at the centres apprised the Chief Minister about the facilities being made available at the centres.

While provision is made for 800 isolation beds at IIT Guwahati, another 440 beds are kept ready at the COVID Care Centre at Maniram Dewan Trade Centre.

Nearly 15,000 COVID 19 cases have been detected in Guwahati in last 10 days.
