CAG pulls up Meghalaya govt for avoidable expenditure of Rs 156.14 cr on Saubhagya

Shillong, Sep 23 (UNI) The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has pulled up Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) for its injudicious decision and awarded a contract above the estimated cost to contractors for implementing the Saubhagya scheme, resulting in an avoidable expenditure of Rs 156.14 crore.
The CAG report, tabled by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in the Assembly on Friday, revealed that the NPP-led government defied the Cabinet Secretary advisory that the notice inviting tender for the Saubhagya scheme be cancelled and the works be taken up departmentally since the rates quoted by the turnkey contractors were above the estimated cost.
The Meghalaya government submitted a proposal in 2018 with a detailed project report worth Rs 1,876.15 crore for implementing the Saubhagya scheme.
