Arunachal closes 600 zero-enrolment schools

Itanagar, July 24 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona on Wednesday informed the Assembly that the State Government has closed down 600 zero-enrolment schools and the process is on to identify more such schools.
Replying to a supplementary raised by senior Congress member Kumar Waii during ‘question hour’ in the House, the Minister divulged that the Government was planning to close more such schools with zero or low enrolment and the non-functional ones.
He was of the opinion that schools with less than 50 students should also be shut and merged with inter-village schools with good residential facilities. “We have 326 low-enrolment schools and 398 zero-enrolment schools,” he said.

Meghalaya police nabs four persons for extorting Rs 10 lakh

Shillong, Sep 18 (UNI) Four people, including two members of the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM), were arrested on Tuesday night by Meghalaya police, for allegedly extorting Rs 10 lakh and criminally intimidating the victim’s daughter, police said on Wednesday.
The arrested persons have been identified as Garnett Gedian Khongwir and Kyrshanbor Lyngdoh (who are members of HNYM), Thounaujam David Singh and Narendra Kabrambam, police said.
