Odisha Congress leaders stage demonstration against hike in prices of petrol and diesel

Bhubaneswar, Jun 29 (UNI) The Odisha unit of the Congress Party led by President Niranjan Patnaik today held a protest demonstration near the Central Intelligence Office here against the unprecedented hike in oil price.

The Congress leaders alleged that the common people are suffering a lot as the prices of Petrol and diesel went up to Rs 81 and 80 per litre respectively.

The Congress leaders alleged that during UPA-2 in 2011 while the price of crude oil was 107 dollar per barrel, the price of petrol and diesel was Rs 78 and Rs 73 per litre respectively.

But now though the price of crude oil in the international market is 42 dollar per barrel but the price of petrol and diesel reached Rs 81 and Rs 80 per litre respectively due to unusual hike of VAT by the state government and the hike in excise duty by the central government.

The Congress leaders said at a time while the people are suffering due to COVID19 pandemic, the hike in fuel price has further compounded their misery and hit them below their belt.

The Party later submitted a memorandum to the President through the ADM Bhubaneswar urging him to intervene in the matter.

The party also planned to hold protest demonstrations in various districts against the hike in oil prices in the coming days.
