Pressure groups hold surprise protest at Meghalaya secretariat

Shillong, Sep 24 (UNI) Pressure groups on Friday staged a “surprise”protest in front of Meghalaya secretariat to mount pressure on the Conrad Sangma-led government to suspend the police officials who responsible in the killing of former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader, Cherishterfield Thangkhiew.
The protestors from three pressure groups – Khasi Students’ Union, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front and Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People – under the banner of Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai (Voice of Mawlai People) gathered outside the main gate of the secretariat seeking "justice" for the death of Thangkhiew in a "fake encounter".
Several police officials quickly rushed to the site as the pressure groups have not announced the protest ahead of schedule as they normally do.
